Distances are road distances from the terminals, rounded to the nearest 5 km. Drive times are door to door in normal traffic, not best-case highway times.

Price is per vehicle, one-way, taxes included. 7–14 pax uses a van: Standard +$20 / VIP +$40 on local zones; quoted in the form.

What POP is

Gregorio Luperón International Airport is the main gateway to the eastern Dominican Republic and the busiest airport in the country for leisure traffic. It sits on the coast a few kilometres south of Sosúa, which is why the drive to most resorts is short: nearly every hotel our passengers fly in for is between ten minutes and an hour away by road.

The airport is privately owned and built in an open-air style — thatched roofs, no jet bridges on most stands, and a walk across the apron from the aircraft to the terminal building. That surprises first-time visitors, but it also means the walk from the aircraft door to immigration is short.

Flights are handled across more than one terminal. Which one you land in depends on your airline, and it changes nothing about the pickup: our dispatcher checks the arriving flight and sends the driver to the correct arrivals exit.

What happens between landing and your driver

The sequence is always the same: walk from the aircraft to the terminal, immigration, baggage claim, customs, then the arrivals doors. Realistically that takes 25 to 50 minutes. Two or three wide-body flights landing in the same window is what makes the difference, not the airline you flew.

You do not need to rush, call anyone, or explain a delay. We track the flight number, so the driver's arrival at the terminal is based on when the aircraft actually lands, not on the time printed on your ticket.

Past customs you walk into a covered arrivals area where drivers wait behind a rail. Ours stands with a printed sign showing the name you gave us. That is why we ask for the name for the pick-up sign when you book — it is the one thing that makes finding each other instant in a crowd.

Ways out of the airport

There are three realistic options. Airport taxis are available on the spot with no booking, but the fare is quoted at the curb and is normally the most expensive of the three for the same car. Resort shuttles are sometimes included in a package; they are cheap but they wait to fill and then stop at several hotels, so a 25-minute drive can become two hours. A pre-booked private transfer is one vehicle for your party only, at a price agreed in writing before you fly.

Ride-hailing is not a reliable plan at POP arrivals. Airport pickup by app is restricted, and travellers who count on it regularly end up negotiating at the curb after a long flight.

We only run private vehicles. There is no shared shuttle in our fleet, so the price you are quoted is for the whole car and it does not change if the flight is late or if you are the last party out of baggage claim.

Choosing a vehicle

One to six passengers with normal luggage travel in an SUV or minivan. Seven to fourteen travel in a van, which carries a surcharge on the local zones. Golf bags, surfboards, wheelchairs, strollers and car seats all fit — tell us in advance and the right vehicle is sent rather than the smallest one that technically has enough seats.

VIP is the same route in a newer, larger vehicle with more space per passenger and bottled water on board. It is not a different service level at the airport: both tiers get the same flight tracking and the same name-sign meet.

Getting back to POP

Departure pickups are timed backwards from your flight. As a rule of thumb we collect three hours before departure from the nearby zones and four hours from Cabarete, Punta Rucia, Río San Juan, Cabrera and anything further, because the road, not the airport, is the variable.

Check-in desks for the big carriers open around three hours before departure, and the airport is genuinely busy on peak Saturday and Sunday mornings. Leaving early costs nothing; leaving late costs a flight.

Book your POP pickup

Send your flight number, date, party size and hotel on WhatsApp. We confirm the vehicle and the fixed price in writing, and there is nothing to prepay.

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP): arrivals, transport and drive times — questions we get daily

How long does it take to get out of POP airport?
From landing to the arrivals doors, expect 25 to 50 minutes including immigration, baggage claim and customs. Several wide-body arrivals in the same window is the main reason for the longer end of that range.
Where does the driver meet me at POP?
In the covered arrivals area after customs, standing behind the rail with a printed sign showing the name you gave when booking. You do not need to call or leave the terminal to find the car.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing changes and there is no extra charge. We track the flight number, so the driver is dispatched against the real landing time.
Is there Uber at Puerto Plata airport?
Airport pickups by ride-hailing app are restricted at POP and are not a dependable plan on arrival. Travellers relying on an app usually end up negotiating a curbside taxi fare instead.
How far is POP from Sosúa?
About 20 km by road, which is a 20 to 30 minute drive door to door in normal traffic. Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata city are closer, at roughly 10 and 5 km.
How early should I leave my hotel for a flight from POP?
Three hours before departure from Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata city, Costambar, Sosúa, Cofresí and Maimón. Four hours from Cabarete, Punta Rucia, Río San Juan, Cabrera and anywhere further west.
