The short runs: 10 to 30 minutes
Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata city, Puerto Plata resort strip, Costambar and Sosúa sit within half an hour of the terminal on good road. These are the zones where a late landing barely costs you anything: the drive is quick, the route is lit, and even at midnight you are in your lobby well inside 40 minutes of walking out of arrivals.
Sosúa is the biggest and most spread-out of them. The published time covers the whole strip, but the difference between the first and last resort on Playa Santiago is a real ten minutes — worth knowing on departure day, not on arrival.
The medium runs: 30 to 60 minutes
Cofresí, Maimón and Cabarete stretch north along the coast. The road is good as far as Maimón, then narrows, and the last stretch into Cabarete is slower than the map suggests — especially after heavy rain. Plan the upper end of the range for a morning departure; the 10am to 1pm check-in wave at POP punishes optimism.
The long runs: 1 to 4 hours
Punta Rucia and Cayo Arena, Río San Juan and Playa Grande, Cabrera, Santo Domingo, SDQ airport and Las Terrenas are full road trips rather than airport hops. On these routes the vehicle genuinely matters — a luxury SUV or Sprinter is worth the difference after the first hour — and a comfort stop is normal and included.
If you are landing at POP and staying in Río San Juan, Cabrera or Santo Domingo, check the airport-choice guide before you book next year's flights: for some of those areas a different airport is genuinely cheaper overall.

- No. The rate is set per zone, not per hotel, so the last resort in Cabarete costs the same as the first one. That is why every hotel page shows the zone rate rather than its own price.
- How accurate are the drive times?
- They are real door-to-door ranges, not brochure numbers, and they already allow for the usual traffic band. The upper end of each range is what you should plan for on a busy afternoon or on departure day.
