Why people fly into POP for Las Terrenas

The Samaná peninsula has its own small airport at El Catey (AZS), but most long-haul flights land at Puerto Plata, so the road run from POP is the normal way in. It is a genuine cross-country drive: east along the coast through Sosúa, Cabarete, Río San Juan and Nagua, then across to Sánchez and over the ridge into Las Terrenas, or on around the bay to Samaná town and Las Galeras. Las Terrenas is the shortest of the three at about two and a half to three hours in clear conditions; Samaná town adds twenty to thirty minutes, Las Galeras another twenty on top of that. There is no taxi supply at the airport willing to run this distance on the spot, and no ride app at the far end. Hotels drop at the main entrance. Apartments and villas on the peninsula often have no street number, so send a pin or the owner's contact and we agree the exact meeting point before the driver leaves Puerto Plata. For Cayo Levantado we drop at the pier in Samaná town.
