One terminal, ten gates
POP opened in 1979 and still runs as a single-terminal airport. The main building handles all passenger traffic: ten gates in total, five with boarding bridges on the satellite concourse and five walk-out positions on the frontal concourse. Arrivals and departures share the same building.
That makes POP unusually simple for a Caribbean gateway. Larger airports split traffic across buildings and force travellers to check a terminal letter before they book a car. Here there is nothing to check — if your flight lands at POP, it lands at the terminal.
If you read somewhere that Puerto Plata has two terminals, it is either out of date or confusing POP with another Dominican airport. Punta Cana (PUJ) is the one with multiple terminal buildings.
The walk from the plane to your driver
The sequence is the same on every flight: off the aircraft — by bridge from the satellite concourse or down steps and across the apron from a frontal stand — then immigration, then the baggage belts, then customs.
After customs you pass one corridor where taxi and tour sellers call out, and then the doors to the open-air arrivals area. Your driver stands outside those doors holding a printed sign with your name.
Do not search faces; search signs. Drivers hold them at eye height, and yours is printed rather than handwritten. A polite 'no, gracias' is all the solicitors need — the arrival-scams guide covers the people who offer to 'call your driver for you'.
How long the walk usually takes
On a quiet arrival — one flight on the ground — passport control to the exit doors runs about 20 to 30 minutes, most of it waiting for bags.
At peak, when two or three wide-bodies land within the same hour, immigration queues stretch and the same walk can take 45 to 60 minutes. Midday and mid-afternoon are the busiest windows in high season.
None of that costs you anything with a booked transfer. Waiting time while you clear the hall is included, and the desk tracks your flight, so a long queue does not leave a driver wondering whether you came.
If you walk out the wrong door
With one terminal this is rare, but the arrivals area has more than one set of doors, and travellers occasionally end up on the car-park side or at the departures drop-off one level over.
The fix is one WhatsApp message to +1 849 377 5889: tell the desk what you can see — car park, departures kerb, taxi rank — and the driver either walks to you or gives you a twenty-second direction. Do not accept a ride offer to 'go round to your driver'. Everything at POP is within a short, flat walk, and your driver is already expecting you.
Departures from the same building
You leave from the building you arrived at. The check-in counters sit inside the main entrance, so the driver drops you at the departures door and you are at the desks in under a minute.
Your return pickup is timed to the flight, not to any terminal: the desk confirms the lobby time the day before, using the buffer for your zone — longer from Cabarete, Río San Juan or Santiago than from Playa Dorada or Sosúa.
If the airline moves your departure, reply in the same WhatsApp thread and the pickup is re-timed. Nothing else changes.
