Wheels down to curb: 25 to 45 minutes
POP is an open-air terminal and it is faster to walk than most airports its size, but immigration is the bottleneck and it is entirely a function of how many aircraft landed in the same twenty minutes. A quiet morning arrival can be at the curb in 25 minutes. A 4pm bank of flights from the US Northeast and Canada can take 45, occasionally more in high season.
Baggage runs in parallel and is rarely the constraint. Customs is a walk-through unless you are flagged. So when you are planning dinner reservations or a check-in cutoff, use landing time plus 35 minutes plus the drive time for your zone, and you will be right more often than not.
The short zones: Playa Dorada, the Village, Costambar
Playa Dorada and the Puerto Plata city are both 10 to 15 minutes, and the variable is the gate, not the road. Playa Dorada is a controlled community: the car stops at the guard post, the driver gives the property and guest name, and the barrier lifts. That is a two-minute routine when the reservation name matches and a fifteen-minute one when it does not, which is why we ask for the name on the booking.
Costambar is 15 to 20 minutes on the same road before the Sosúa turn. Nothing about these runs is hard; the whole trip is usually shorter than the immigration queue you just cleared.
The strip: Sosúa and Cofresí
Sosúa is 20 to 30 minutes. The spread comes from where on the strip you are — Santiago and Amber Cove sit at the near end, the big Palace and Riu complexes further along — and from resort gate traffic at the 3pm check-in peak, when a line of arrival vehicles can back up in a driveway.
POP airport lies between Puerto Plata and Sosúa. Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata city, Costambar, Cofresí and Maimón are reached to the west; Sosúa, Cabarete, Río San Juan and Cabrera are to the east. They are separate pricing zones. Use the exact hotel or villa name and the current rate table instead of treating every north-coast address as Sosúa.
The long runs: Maimón, Cabarete and beyond
Use the published driving estimate for your destination: Maimón 30–35 minutes, Cabarete 25–35 minutes, and Punta Rucia 75–90 minutes in normal conditions. These are driving estimates, not guarantees or departure pickup times. Allow extra time for weather, road conditions and the exact property entrance; dispatch confirms the plan for your flight.
Río San Juan is 60 to 75 minutes and Cabrera 75 to 90, both east along the coast road. Santo Domingo, city or SDQ airport, is 3.5 to 4 hours on the Autopista Duarte and should be planned as a half-day.
Departure buffers we use, by zone
For the ride back to POP we schedule pickup on a buffer measured from your scheduled departure, not from the drive time. It is operator advice, not an airline rule, and it is built from watching the check-in queues: 2.5 hours before wheels-up from Playa Dorada and the Village, 3 hours from Sosúa and Cofresí, 3.5 hours from Cabarete.
The extra half hour on Cabarete is the road, not caution. The extra time on all of them is POP departures, which is a busy, warm terminal where a US-bound morning bank can put 200 people in front of you at a single airline counter.
If your flight is the first out at 7am, we will tell you plainly that a 3:30am pickup from Cabarete is what the buffer implies, and we will still do it. If you are on an afternoon departure, the buffer is comfortable rather than brutal.
Traffic bands: normal, check-in peak, night
The same drive is not the same length at every hour, so the table below gives three bands for all fourteen drop-off zones rather than one optimistic figure. Normal traffic is a weekday morning or a quiet evening. Peak is 15:00 to 18:00, when the resort check-in wave, the staff shift change on the Sosúa strip and Sunday afternoon returns all land on the same two-lane road. Night is roughly 22:00 to 05:00.
Peak costs you 30 to 50 percent on the local zones — Sosúa goes from 20–30 minutes to 30–45, Cofresí to 35–50, Maimón to 40–55. It is the strip itself and the resort driveways, not the airport road, which is why a Playa Dorada run barely moves.
Cofresí and Maimón are west of POP, beyond Puerto Plata. Sosúa and Cabarete are east of the airport. Use the actual property address and the published destination drive time, then allow extra time for traffic, weather and airport procedures. Dispatch confirms the departure pickup time in writing.
Weekends follow the same shape with one addition. Saturday is the biggest arrival and departure day of the week at POP, so both the terminal and the strip run at peak-band times for most of the afternoon, and Sunday evening adds local traffic returning from the beach at Maimón and Cabarete.
None of this changes your price. The rate is agreed in writing before you fly and the band only tells you when to leave.

For 7–14 passengers on local routes to Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata city, Costambar, Cofresí, Maimón, Sosúa or Cabarete, add $20 Standard or $40 VIP per vehicle per journey. Larger groups and all longer group routes require a written custom quote. Declare all luggage and child seats before confirming the vehicle.
